Varun Sandesh, who made his debut with a hit film like ‘Happy Days’ successfully overcame the second film hitch with ‘Kotha Bangaru Lokam’ by making it run above average to hit mark. However, his third film ‘Yevaraina Yeppudaina’ did not do so well at the box office. Realising that sticking to a particular image won’t help him, Varun chose to throw his weight to action masala too. Anandi Arts had come forward to do one such film introducing Sandeep Gunnam as director. Though not so great, Varun tried his best to do action scenes, but could not impress the audiences with his lean personality.
PLUS:
Though a debutant director Sandeep handled the story efficiently with a gripping screenplay and tight movement of the subject. The entire story revolves around the hero and his bike. This delicate storyline was aptly handled by the director, by mixing elements like sentiment, love and friendship. Surprisingly, the character of main villain in the film was suppressed and the second villain was highlighted. The main villain gets killed by the second villain, who is also his brother. This highlights the greatness of the director who proved that criminals would have no sentiment. Though not all the songs are impressive, a couple of tunes by Achu are good to listen, while the remix of a hit song ‘Kurralloy Kurrallu’ was perfectly tuned and choreographed on the screen. Another song with Hindi film titles is also good to listen and was shot well. Action scenes by Rambo Rajkumar are also impressive with a good amount of nativity. Varun gave a better performance than his earlier films. For a change he played a responsible teenager and tried his best to do action scenes. However, he should improve his dialogue modulation. Neha Sharma of ‘Chiruta’-fame is okay opposite Varun and she shed her weight and appeared cute and slip. Others like Tanikella Bharani, Ravishankar and others did justice to their roles. Ali plays the role of Jilani, a loan defaulter, and tickled the funny bone of audiences, while MS Narayana and Nalla Venu also did a decent job.
MINUS:
Though looked glamorous, Neha Sharma still needs to hone her acting skills. The major draw back of the film is the lean personality of Varun Sandesh. He should tone up his body he wants to continue his career in action films. The director, though ran the story in a gripping manner, he should also concentrate on comedy scenes as it gives a good relief and provides good entertainment. Varun Sandesh failed to impress the audiences in action scenes and it appeared quite cinematic despite a good show by the hero.
REMARKS:
Anandi Arts, which is known for bringing out family and love subjects chose to do an action film, of course with a touch of love and sentiment. The banner succeeded in its attempt to select a good director who efficiently managed to bring out the film with mass elements. The entire film was targeted the youth and mass audiences and it almost succeeded in it. However, with less saleability of the hero, the openings are quite low and it may pick up after good publicity and mouth-talk among the young generation and mass audiences. One had to wait and watch how far Varun Sandesh succeeds in pulling crowds to the theatre.

Review
Story
The story starts in 1970's. Quick Gun Murugan (Rajendra Prasad) is a vegetarian cowboy who is against killing cows and other animals. He takes it as his duty to protect the world against non-vegetarians. Rice Place Reddy (Nasser) is on a mission to convert all vegetarian hotels into non-vegetarian hotels so that he could expand his chain of non-veg hotels. In the process, he confronts Quick Gun Murugan and succeeds in killing him. Quick Gun Murugan is taken to heaven and there he appeals to Chitra Gupta (Vinay Pathak) about how the fate has terminated his mission to save the world from non-vegetarianism. A convinced Chitra Gupta sends him back to the earth. And it is 2007 by the time he returns. By now, Rice Plate Reddy became all-powerful food baron who is on the verge of coming up with 'Mc Dosa' brand of hotels that serve only non-vegetarian dosas. The rest of the story is all about how Quick Gun Murugan saves the world.
Actors:
Rajendra Prasad comes up with another entertaining performance. Language might be different, but the comedy timing is same for Rajendra Prasad even in English version. He is just perfect. He has to look serious and at the same time he need to make us laugh. His dialogue delivery is too good. Rambha is charming and sensuous as 'Mango Dolly'. Nassar entertains as a Rice Place Reddy who gets tensed whenever he listens to Murugan name. Raju Sundaram did the role of Rowdy MBA and he is nice. Ashwin Mushran's foreign accent is good. Vinay Pathak is apt as Chitra Gupta. Sandhya Mridul and Ranvir Sheroy did the roles of TV reporters. Anu Menon (Lola Kutti of Channel V) did the role of QGM's locket love.
Technical departments:
Story - screenplay - direction: Quick Gun Murugan is based on a character developed by Rajesh Devraj for a 2-minute spoof on Channel V. Rajesh developed a full legth story on this character by making it a spoof on all routine Indian potboilers of 1970's and spaghetti westerns. It is an outrageously funny script handled neatly by the director Shashank Ghosh. There are funny and wacky moments in the movie. The director has stuck to quirky way narration and succeeded in tickling your funny bone. They made spoofs on cow-boy movies, maa sentiment, vamp character, dialogues of typical indian heroes, old Tamil films etc. However, there is gore and bloodshed in this movie. I have liked the following things in this movie -
1. The flashback episode where spaghetti western is mixed with sambar and masala dasa.
2. Naming of various departments: Yamalokam as ministry of deaths and another place as institute of coconut climbing. The entire Yamaloka administration is replicated with typical government officer's set-up.
3. Tears of Quickgun falling into the whiskey glass.
3. The gun fights of Murugan (generally we get description of these fights with Rajnikant as caricature in forwarded e-mails. Rajni himself has done it in the last song of his blockbuster Sivaji)
4. Murugan's girlfriend locked up in a locket.
5. Mango Dolly stealing the blue print from the underwear of Rice Place Reddy.
6. The music of the movie (happy birthday tune for death scene) and the way cowboy music is played with Indian instruments.
Other technical departments: Camera work of the movie is alright. Dialogues are very funny. Especially 'mind it' and 'i say' which are made popular on Quickgun Murugan series of Channel V. Music is funny and entertaining. Art direction deserves appreciation for coming up with creative work with a limited budget. This movie is made on shoe-string budget.
Analysis: If you are a guy who likes the spoofs on Channel V, Quick Gun Murugan is for you. The plus points are ever-green Rajendra Prasad as the green cowboy and the comedy. The negative points are blood shed and boring moments towards climax. There is a bit of Tamil language in the movie. Telugu guys are advised to watch the English version of the movie to get an authentic feel of the movie

Film: Banam Cast: Nara Rohith (debut film), Vedika, Ranadheer, Shayaji Shinde, Bhanuchander, Rajeev Kanakala, AVS, Shivanarayana, Ragini, Giridhar and others Dialogues: Nagaraju Gandham Music: Manisharma Cinematography: Anil Bhandari Editing: Marthand K Venkatesh Art: Bhupesh R Bhupati Action: Ram-Laxman Executive producer: K Saibaba Produced by: Seshu Priyanka Chalasani Banner: 3 Angels Studio Story, screenplay and directed by: Chaitanya Dantaloori Release Date: September 16, 2009 CBFC Rating: U/A What’s it about! The film is set in 1989 at Ranasthali in Srikakulam district. Bhagat (Nara Rohith) is an idealistic youngster who aspires to become IPS officer, as he believes that only justice can be brought through ‘legal system’. His father is a Naxalite leader but ‘retires’ from the movement to spend time with his son. One day, Bhagat happens to see newly wed woman (Vedika) sitting at Railway Station alone and he comes to know from her that her in-laws sent her away to bring dowry. On the same day, her father dies, her in-laws reject her, and so he brings her to his home. Soon a local rowdy eyes on her that makes Bhagat to fight with him. In the melee, the rowdy dies and Bhagat goes to jail. On the other hand, several police offices try to contain the activities of the rowdy’s boss, Patnaik (Ranadheer), but couldn’t do so. How our hero Bhagat does it being within the ‘system’ forms the rest of the story. Analysis Banam is a sensible movie. Niche audiences who like films with different approach and offbeat stories can like it. Although it starts off pretty promisingly and sets you up rather well, it fails to continue the same till the end. Debutant director Chaitanya should be commended for treading off the beaten track in narrating the movie and in selecting the story. Despite snail pace of the movie, first half arrests you and intrigues you. The director has tried to bring certain stylized depiction of heroism and scenes. Climax scenes are pretty ordinary. The film is essentially about an idealistic guy who wants to cleanse the system. Question is: why should the film happen in 1989? What is so important about that period? Was it Naxalism? Even hero employing four police officers under training to cleanse the system is not told in convincing manner. Other than these faults, the film on the whole is sensible and a very good attempt. Nara Rohith’s look and his acting skills, some good locales, first half of the movie are interesting part of the film. Performances Nara Rohith, son of former Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s brother, makes a very confident debut. He has good looks and his subtle acting (is it deliberate) is very impressive. At a time, all star sons and newcomers are debuting with a commercial film; Nara Rohith should be commended for choosing this offbeat film. Like Abhay Deol in Bollywood, he can be good choice for certain roles. He looks promising. Dialogue delivery is his strength. Vedika in a Brahmin girl is okay. Looks like her role is created to show off hero’s idealistic nature than weaving a romantic thread. Shayaji Shinde’s role of a former Naxalite is poorly etched. Other actors are okay. Ranadhir as main villain does justice to his role Technically, the film is very nice. Cinematography by Anil Bhandari (is he the same cameraman who did the shabby Mallepuvvu?) is excellent. The locales they have chosen (near Bobbili and Pollachi) also have brought freshness on to the screen. Dialogues by Gandham Nagaraju (of Gamyam fame) are poetic. Art director has succeeded in recreating 80’s look. Even the director has intelligently created scenes like Shiva cycle chain scene, and a theatre showing Geetanjali film, to depict that period. After a long time, Manisharma has given good music especially his background score is splendid. The song, Kadile Padam , has good lyrical value (Vanamali.). It is nice that debutant director Chaitanya Dantaloori has brought some realism into Telugu films at a time Tollywood increasingly falling into the trap of masala movies. He definitely seems to have innovative ideas but he needs to put it in more channelised way. His shot making style resembles to RGV’s. Though he lost his grip in the climax scenes, as a director he looks a promising talent. Producer Seshu Priyanka has good taste. Bottom-line! Banam is an offbeat film with sensible approach. Although it has its faults, it should be appreciated for attempting such films. Nara Rohith and director Chaitanya look promising. The film might be liked by niche audiences.

Satya (Naga Chaitanya) is a student who discontinues his college in Vizag and comes to Hyderabad to stay with his uncle (Sunil). He observes that a small time politician called JD (JD Chakri) manipulates two student gangs in a college to serve his interests. Satya joins the same college and tries to unite students and reform them. The rest of the story is all about why he discontinued his studies in Vizag and joined college in Hyderabad.
Naga Chaitanya: It's a big challenge to do a character that is underplayed for a debutant like Naga Chaitanya. And Naga Chaitanya passes it with flying colors. He is extremely good in emotional scenes. And he is a very good actor when it comes to scenes that require histrionics. However, he looked little shy in romantic scenes with heroine. He needs to be more casual in general scenes. His voice is good. With better modulation he can deliver any kind of Telugu dialogues efficiently. And he has got the same charming eyes and screen presence like Nagarjuna. If he gets the right scripts with apt commercial elements, he will become a huge star in the days to come. ANR and Nagarjuna are known for having tremendous female following and Naga Chaitanya inherits that legacy now right with his first movie.
Others: Karthika is adequate in the acting department. However, she didn't suit the character. This type character is tailor-made for actresses like Genelia/Asin who have tremendous mischievous screen presence. Dubbing done by Savita Reddy suited the character, but didn't match with the actress (Karthika). Prakash Raj has a relatively small role, but has a vital part to play in the film and he is extremely effective as the principal who brings change in hero's outlook. It's a sleep walk for JD Chakri to play this role and he is extremely casual. Brahmanandam entertains in a limited role. The guy who did the role of a student leader Guna is talented. Sreya D suited the role well. Two cute kids who follow the heroine have performed well. Sunil provides some comic relief. Surya, Hema and Sitara are adequate. All the new cast in the movie could able to bring freshness.
Story - screenplay - directon: The basic story of the movie is about a student's redemption. He does a mistake and he want to redeem himself of that sin by achieving a goal. It looks quite different and noble when we read it on paper. However, the
Other departments: Songs scored by Sandeep Chowta are neat. Title song makes an impact in the theater. Background music and mixing dominates the scenes at times. Cinematography by Sameer Reddy is nice. Dialogues written by Vasu Varma deserves applause (naa mundu nee paina jarchaku (hero to JD) and school paaTalu cheppi pariksha pedutundi, jeevitam pariksha petti paataalu nerputundi. etc). The location of college shot in Amritsir is aesthetic. Fights are good and bike races are shot slickly. Editing should have been crisper as there quite a few unnecessary scenes in the movie.
Analysis: First half of the movie is inadequate. Second half is better. This movie can be made in two ways. One way is to insert commercial elements and make it a masala movie. The other way is to stick to story and stay away from commercial gimmicks. Producer Dil Raju should be commended for sticking to the basics though it is a risky proposition. But films like these need a tight screenplay and gripping narration. The narration and screenplay given by Vasu Varma diluted the main point. Naga Chaitanya proves to be a prospective
